The MRVL pre-earnings setup is unusual for a reason that has nothing to do with the quarter: Marvell agreed to buy Lumentum for $115 billion on November 2, and the December 1 print is the first report it files with that deal in the room. Our November 4 scan priced MRVL at $161.83, down 5.9% from the November 3 close.
Everything else about the row is close to the top of the board. The score is 83 at rank 19 of ninety-three, the book is 44 analysts with 32 buys and not one sell, and the three-day implied move is 14.4%.
What makes the setup hard is that the market and the analysts are reading different things. The book says the company is fine. The price says the acquisition is not, and 27 days is a long time for that argument to run.
The row, 27 days out
Score 83, rank 19, sector Technology, print date December 1, earnings sentiment Mixed, short interest 3.3% of float, market capitalization $145.56 billion, implied volatility 79.7, and a price of $161.83 at the November 4 scan.
Decomposed, the 83 is the full 25 points for analyst coverage, 22.2 points for an 88.6% buy-side share, 14 points for seven strong buys, the full 15 for a 20.4% five-day implied move, and 7 for the Mixed sentiment reading.
The book is the most one-sided on the board. Thirty-two buys and zero sells, against AMAT on 30 buys and no sells and ZS on 29. There is no analyst on this page who rates MRVL a sell, which is why the conviction column pays out 22.2 of a possible 25.
When does MRVL report earnings, and is it a buy before the print?
Marvell reports on Tuesday December 1, 2026, which is 27 days out from the November 4 scan. The print lands on a calendar that has seven other names on it: OKTA, MDB, CRWD, GTLB, NTAP, ASAN and MRVL all print on the same day.
Whether that makes MRVL a buy before the print is a question about what the numbers are, so here they are. A 83 score, a 14.4% three-day implied move, a $177.10 analyst target 9.4% above the scan price, a $146.85 downside mark, and a stock down 5.9% on the day we ran the scan.
What makes this setup different from the others on that calendar is that a $115 billion acquisition has been sitting on the stock for two days and the book has not moved at all. Thirty-two buys were on the sheet before the deal was announced, and they are still on it.
The $115 billion deal is now part of the setup
Bloomberg reported on November 2 that Marvell is acquiring Lumentum in a $115 billion deal, and TechCrunch covered the same announcement the same day, calling it one of the largest deals in tech history.
The market reaction came next, and it was not gentle. Yahoo Finance reported on November 3 that TD Cowen halved its MRVL price target, citing material headwinds after the Lumentum deal, and CNBC ran a piece the same day headlined that Marvell Technology could plunge on its latest multibillion-dollar acquisition.
Barron's covered it on November 3 as the deal getting even more complicated, and Semiconductor Today carried TrendForce's view on November 4 that the acquisition could challenge Broadcom's market leadership.
MRVL was down 5.9% in our November 4 scan, at $161.83. We have not confirmed a single dated headline that moved it on November 4, so we are not going to claim one. What the record does show is a company that fell from the announcement, a broker cutting its target in half, and a price that has not recovered the ground.
How does MRVL's implied move compare with the names printing on December 1?
It is the widest of them by a wide margin. MRVL's 14.4% three-day implied move and 79.7 implied volatility sit above OKTA at 15.8% on the higher side, with MDB at 14.2%, CRWD at 12.3%, GTLB at 10.7% and NTAP at 7.1%.
NTAP is the cleanest comparison because it prints on the same day. NTAP carries a score of 58, 21 analysts with 7 buys and no sells, a 7.1% three-day implied move and 64.6 implied volatility, at a price of $187.98 in the November 4 scan. MRVL's 14.4% is roughly double NTAP's 7.1%.
Both books are one-sided, and the option market is pricing them very differently. NTAP's two-day straddle costs $20.30 on a sixteen-day expiry, MRVL's costs $12.465 on a two-day expiry. The market is not charging Marvell for a quiet December 1.
The size gap is worth naming too. MRVL is a $145.56 billion company and NVDA, the highest-scoring name on the board at 93, carries a 6.5% implied move for its November 17 print. The most expensive implied move on the board belongs to FIS at 42.7%, but MRVL is the widest move among the names that have an AI infrastructure name on their business.
What has to change for MRVL to be a buy before the print?
The sentiment column, first, because it is holding 7 of 15 points. A Mixed reading is the lowest of the three positive scores, and it is the only column on this row that a single quarter can move on its own.
Second the price, because a 5.9% decline on a 32-buy book is the market disagreeing with the analysts in public. If the acquisition settles and the price stabilises, the setup becomes what the score says it is. If the price keeps falling while the book stays at 32 buys, one of the two is wrong.
Third, the event risk itself. A $115 billion acquisition is not a thing a company absorbs quietly, and the print on December 1 is where the first questions get answered in public: what the deal costs, what it adds, and what it does to the numbers the street has modelled.
What is the setup worth on its own numbers?
Three things are worth separating. The score of 83 is strong and it is mostly the book talking. The implied move of 14.4% over three days and 20.4% over five is the market saying the print matters more than a normal print.
And the short interest of 3.3% says this is not a squeeze setup. There is no crowded short to lean on and no cheap volatility to buy. MRVL is priced for a wide, event-driven move, and 27 days is how long the market has to make up its mind about which way.
